Message from Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon Chairman

Dear Runners,

Welcome to the 10th edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon.

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the marathon, it gives me great pleasure to look back over the years and see just how much the marathon has grown in stature and popularity to become the biggest running event in the country. Our inaugural event in 2003 started with only 4,000 participants and in our 10th edition we expect over 18,000 participants.

The marathon has made great strides in supporting Seeing is Believing, a Standard Chartered Bank initiative aimed at eradicating avoidable blindness in children under the age of nine.  To date over USD1,000,000 has been raised through the marathon to support five eye care  projects across Kenya of which 4,500 children have benefited from the proceeds of the marathon. This continues to inspire the bank to continue sponsoring the event. Through the theme of this year’s marathon ‘Run for a Reason’, we encourage everyone to participate and support more children to restore sight.

Since inception the success of the marathon has been made possible by the incredible support we have received from our sponsors, volunteers, Athletics Kenya, City Council of Nairobi, Kenya Police and Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.  We are truly grateful for your unwavering support.

We remain committed to running a model event for Kenya that matches international standards as well as being a fun experience for participants.

I look forward to welcoming you all at the start line of the 10th anniversary edition of the Marathon and wish you a great race.
