About the Marathon
Since its first edition in 2003, the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has grown tremendously and has earned recognition from World Athletics and the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). Having attracted over 270,000 participants across its 19 editions, it is currently the largest single-day sporting event in Kenya. In 2022, we maintained the hybrid format and registered over 20,000 participants both physical and virtual. We maintained the marathon route along the Southern Bypass that allowed great views of the Nairobi National Park and adopted a new venue, Uhuru Gardens. In our commitment in hosting a sustainable marathon, we managed to plant over 21,000 trees and recycled 100% of the plastic waste and the marathon kits from 2021.
We are thrilled to announce the 20th edition and the 20th anniversary of our annual marathon event! For two decades, we’ve been bringing together runners from all over the world for a day of excitement, challenge, and community. We can’t wait to mark this milestone with our dedicated runners, volunteers, and supporters. From humble beginnings to one of the premier races on the calendar, we’ve come a long way. Get ready to run with us on this special edition on 29th October 2023 and make this year’s marathon memorable.
All marathon proceeds go towards the FutureMakers Initiative. Our goal is to raise KES 40 million in 2023 to tackle inequality and promote economic inclusion for our younger generation.

Why do we run?
Our initial cause, Seeing is Believing, successfully raised USD 100 million worldwide, which led to the bank adopting the new “Futuremakers” cause in 2019; a global initiative to tackle inequality and promote greater economic inclusion for young people.
