About Marathon

SCNM 2024 - About Marathon

Standard Chartered Kenya is the proud Title Sponsor of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, the largest single-day athletic event held in Kenya since 2003. The Bank, with the support of event organisers, Athletics Kenya, have built an event that has become internationally renowned and has placed Kenya on the global map.

Since 2003, proceeds from the marathon focused on eradicating preventable blindness through the ‘Seeing is Believing’ initiative. In 2019, the marathon embarked on a new chapter with the adoption of the ‘Futuremakers’ initiative, aiming to address inequality and foster economic inclusion for the younger generation. The Futuremakers program has touched the lives of over one million young people, with a significant focus on empowering young women. To date, the program has raised over USD 600,000 but invested over USD 2.8 million through Futuremakers impacting over 27,000 lives. We currently have 5 projects focused on Education, Employability and Entrepreneurship. All funds raised from the marathon go towards the ‘Future Makers’ Initiative.

The 21st edition of the marathon will be held on Sunday 27th October 2024 and will take up a hybrid format – a satellite run in Kisumu, Kakamega and Mombasa and a physical marathon. The physical marathon will be run along the Southern Bypass in Nairobi with a great view of the Nairobi National Park. We look to host 23,000 runners from across the globe including persons with disabilities and engage 1000 volunteers. Through tree planting and reducing plastic usage, we are working to make this marathon edition the most sustainable marathon in the region.

2024 Objectives:

  1. Raise KES 40 million for the Futuremakers initiative.
  2. Plant a minimum of 100,000 tree seedlings in partnership with Nairobi County and ensure 100% recycling of generated waste.
